DVD: The Florentine (1999)

The Florentine is an engaging drama directed by Nick Stagliano. The talented cast includes Jeremy Davies, Michael Madsen, Jim Belushi, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, Virginia Madsen, and Luke Perry. It is a collection of stories intertwined by friendship.

Set in a small blue-collar Pennsylvania town, The Florentine follows a tightly-knit group of friends who have known each other since childhood and have kept close ties into adulthood. They gather at a bar called The Florentine which is owned by Whitey. The plot revolves around the upcoming wedding of Whitey's sister Molly. The movie follows the individual stories of the experiences of the characters in the days and weeks leading up to the wedding.

Due to financial difficulties, Whitey fears that he will lose the bar to to the local gangster Joe McCullough, who holds the note on the bar; Whitey's friend Bobby, who is a small time bookie, enters dangerous territory when he steps on Joe's toes with a bold con that he pulls with a local boxer; Frankie threaten's to financially sink his friend Whitey when he finds himself the victim of a con; On the eve of Molly's wedding, her ex-fiancee Teddy comes back into town. His old friend Truby tries to smooth things over and make sure that Teddy's return does not result in any trouble, but he himself finds trouble with a local diner waitress that he has been pursuing.

With the direction of Nick Stagliano The Florentine has a natural feel and brings forth the atmosphere of a small working-class town. The wonderfully talented cast brings the interesting storylines to life and the viewer can feel the bonds of friendship that connect the characters.

On a side note, the actor that plays the boxer nicknamed Pretty is Lillo Brancato. Brancato found his own real life trouble with the law and is currently in jail in connection with the shooting death of an off-duty NYC police officer Daniel Enchautegui in 2005.

* About this Blog*

Welcome to my LJ blog. Have a seat, make yourself comfortable, and have a look around. My blog consists of my personal reviews of movies and books. I like to share what I find interesting and moving. For the people that have not watched the movies reviewed here or read the books, I don't give away endings and surprising plot twists, I include only what I think is important to mention in my reviews. So do look around, I hope you find your stay interesting. I especially like dramas; historical films, especially pertaining to WWII; true crime; documentaries; and foreign films.

I am also a fan of Jeremy Davies and there are quite a few of his films here.

In addition to my reviews, I also include silly personal entries too.

This blog is updated regularly so do check back often to see what else has been added.
