The Phantom Prince

Dina Antique Photo

As is obvious to anyone who reads my blog, I am a huge fan of true crime stories. Some of the cases that fascinate and interest me the most are: Charles Manson, Gary Ridgway (The Green River Killer), Ed Gein, David Berkowitz (Son of Sam), John Wayne Gacy, Leopold and Loeb, and of course the classic unsolved cases like Jack the Ripper and The Black Dahlia. Of course I knew who Ted Bundy was but I never delved into the details of his case...until I read Green River Running Red by Ann Rule. The book deals with the case of Gary Ridgway but Ted Bundy figures into it as well. That interested me enough to prompt me to read Rule's Stranger Beside Me which completely focused on Ted Bundy. And I found it absolutely fascinating and stunning, it was a real page turner and got me interested enough to dig deeper and read more about the Bundy case. So I subsequently ended up reading 6 more books about him: The Only Living Witness, Conversations with a Killer, The Riverman, Defending the Devil, Bundy: The Killer Next Door, and Bundy: The Deliberate Stranger. I think I've become something of a “Bundyphile” as they say. Seriously I think the case is so fascinating, the more I find out about it, the more I want to know.

BUT while I was finding and reading all those books, I knew that there was one particular book that I needed to get, possibly the best book ever written about Ted Bundy - The Phantom Prince. What makes this book so interesting is that it was written by Bundy's ex-fiancee and what it shares with Ann Rule's book is that it is a personal account rather than a retelling of Bundy's crimes. This book shows you the man behind the crimes, it takes you up close and personal to one of the most infamous figures in the annals of true crime. But the problem is that the book is out of print and hard to get. I did manage to find copies on the internet at places like Alibris and AbeBooks but since this is an in-demand book they sell for upwards of $100 and there's no way that I could afford to pay that for a book right now. At one point I scoured the internet and came across someone selling a copy for $40 at a website that sells college textooks – OMG great I can afford that! Happily I was going to place my order in 2 days when I got my money but by the next day of course someone else had found it and snatched it up. I had also seen it being sold in that price range another time at Amazon but again I had to wait and that copy was snatched up within a couple of hours. Ok so I grudgingly resigned myself to never ever getting this book and it was becoming all the more frustrating because I kept reading about how it is THE book to get if you're interested in the Ted Bundy case, as I mentioned, it is often referred to as the best book ever written about him. Grrr...

But then one day I unexpectedly came across a copy being sold on Ebay Continued Here... )

Book Meme

Dina Antique Photo
This is a Book Meme that I got from the lovely [info]katje0711.

01. Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack?

It usually don't snack when I read because I don't like getting crumbs on the pages or have anything dripping or falling on them.

02. Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?

I don't like marking them, like Kat the only ones that I've marked/highlighted were college books.

03. How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?

Bookmarks...I actually love bookmarks. I like pretty, colorful bookmarks and I like to collect them. I also like to make my own bookmarks with craft papers and stickers, etc., Yeah I actually think I have a sickness about having pretty bookmarks. I very rarely dog-ear a page.

04. Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?

The majority of what I read is non-fiction, mostly history topics and true crime.

05. Hard copy or audiobooks?

Hard copy.

06. Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point?

I usually like to read to the end of chapters.

07. If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away? Write it down to look it up later? Just try to infer what it means from the rest of the sentence, and keep going?

At first I'll try to infer what it means from the rest of the sentence but if I can't I'll stop and look it up before I go further.

08. What are you currently reading?

"Voice of the City: Vaudeville and Popular Culture in New York" by Robert Snyder.

09. What is the last book you bought?

"Bundy: The Deliberate Stranger" by Richard Larsen.

10. Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can read more than one at a time?

One book at a time.

11. Do you like re-reading books?

Yes I definitely will re-read books that I find interesting/moving.

OMG has it really been that long since I last posted??? Wow it doesn't seem that long. I feel bad that I neglected my LJ for so long, I haven't really been online so much. Anyway I'm popping in to say that I'm still alive. I definitely want to resurrect my LJ. In the months that I haven't been posting I've basically been reading a lot, mostly true crime books so I'll be posting about that.

I'm also going to be going through all my f/list post and catch up with you guys!

Kitty Cuteness

Dina Antique Photo
A feral cat and her 3 adorable kittens come by my backyard all the time because I can't resist putting food and water out for them. I sometimes give them milk too although I was leery about that at first because some adult cats don't tolerate it well...thankfully these kitties all tolerate it well. I took some videos of them and I sent them to my sister in NY because I knew she would enjoy seeing them. While I was at it I thought you guys might enjoy seeing them too. I have 2 videos so far. They're a little blurry but I think that's a result of converting the files from one format to another and then uploading them, I think it made it loose some clarity. But the kitty cuteness is still there.

Also let me apologize for the royally annoying sound of my voice in the background. It's funny that you don't really hear what you sound like every day until you hear yourself on tape..at least that's true for me. I didn't realize how thick my Queens NY accent is, and I also sound like a little girl. Ugh maybe it's best if you turn the sound off...Thankfully the adorable kitties take away from my grating voice.

This is a photo of the beautiful custom coffee mug that Ginny got me for my birthday last year. She is too awesome and thoughtful, it's a beautiful gift, I love it. BTW nobody is allowed to drink out of it but me. LOL.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart Ginny!

Book: The Stranger Beside Me

Dina Antique Photo

If you are interested in true crime, Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me is a must read. Even if you are not a true crime fan it is still a riveting and absorbing book. The person at the center of this book is infamous, his name is synonymous with “serial killer”, as a matter of fact his is the name that is most likely to pop into your head when you hear the phrase “serial killer” - Ted Bundy. Even 20 years after his death in Florida's electric chair, Ted Bundy remains a fascinating and intriguing figure. Bearing the responsibility of shockingly ferocious crimes, the intelligent, charming, and impossibly good-looking Bundy became a captivating personality as he handled his own defense at his famous court trials. All at once he was charismatic, handsome, manipulative, sneaky, brainy, sharp, creepy, and mysterious. The Stranger Beside Me adds another layer of complexity to the person of Ted Bundy.

First of all I want to say that The Stranger Beside Me scared me to pieces, so much so that I actually took to making sure my doors and windows were locked and secured every night and I even booby trapped them should anyone attempt to break in. The only other book that scared me that much was Helter Skelter by Charles Manson's prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi.
